(r. c. 268–232 b.c.e.) The third ruler of the Indian Maurya dynasty and the first king to unify India. During the early years of his reign he was a tyrant, but later he converted to Buddhism and governed compassionately in accordance with Buddhist ideals.

(règne : 268-232 AEC) Troisième souverain de la dynastie indienne des Maurya, il unifia l’Inde. Il régna d’abord en tyran mais, par la suite, se convertit au bouddhisme et gouverna avec compassion, en accord avec les idéaux du bouddhisme. Il devint le grand protecteur du bouddhisme et contribua à sa propagation.
